Director’s Statement

I have a photo of my parents taped to the wall above my desk. It’s special to me because it’s the only picture that I have with both of them actually sitting together. Even while the world devalues so much of my humanity as a Black, Muslim woman, because of them, I know who I am. I wrote this story in honor of them and to make us all smile. Like the couple in my story, in 1966 my parents opened a donut shop. Through the years, that shop kept food on the table and a roof over our heads, but it certainly was not easy for them. Now that I am a wife, a mother and an entrepreneur, I realize how hard it must have been for them to be their best for a marriage, children and a struggling business all at once. When my parents passed away suddenly, they were in the midst of a divorce. I often wonder whether they are still in heaven fussing! Their story is like the story of so many other parents who work themselves to exhaustion, but still have ample love for their children. The lessons they taught me are an indelible part of my parents’ legacy and I am forever grateful. I love telling stories that celebrate the best of who we are. I am my best because of them. This film is inspired by their story.
